Order of a Synagogue Meeting During New Testament Times



1. The “Shema” would be recited,
                “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:”          Deuteronomy 6:4
2. Certain prayers would be spoken
3. Reading from the Torah (Genesis through Deuteronomy)
4. Reading from the Prophets (with the purpose of applying the Torah)
5. A Teaching would be taught by a member of the synagogue. A different person could
        be chosen for each Sabbath.
6. Rabbis would be invited to teach, especially visiting rabbis like Paul, etc. Paul, the  
       rabbi would of course take this opportunity to teach about Jesus Christ the one true 
       God and Savior of the world!

The sacred language of the synagogue was Hebrew.

 Jesus taught and preached in synagogues.
“And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works?”                                                                                    Matthew 13:54  
 “And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, …”                                                       Mark 6:2 
 “And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all.”                        Luke 4:15 
“And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee.”                                          Luke 4:44 
“Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing.” John 18:20
