In the King James Version, Mark 16:1-2; 16:9; Luke 18:12; John 20:1; 20:19; Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 16:2 the Word ‘Sabbath’ has been wrongly translated ‘week’.
What is the etymology of this word?
In the King James Version’s O.T., the Hebrew Word for ‘Sabbath’ is never translated ‘week’.
In Brenton’s translation of the Septuagint, the Greek word for ‘Sabbath’ is never translated ‘week’.
In the Jewish Publication Society’s English translation of 1917, the Hebrew word for ‘Sabbath’ is never translated ‘week’.
How does the Greek or Hebrew words for ‘Sabbath’ possibly mean ‘week’?
Is there any support for translating the word ‘Sabbath’ as a week?
Very clearly from the beginning of the Holy Bible, the word ‘Sabbath’ meant a day of rest. It never meant a week of rest. It never meant a ‘week’.
Matthew 28:1
“In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.” Matthew 28:1
Another problem with the KJV’s translation is not translating correctly the plurals of the Greek Word for ‘Sabbath’. Both are plural in the Greek. So – ‘Sabbaths’ and their wrong translation not week but ‘weeks’.
Should be translated:
“But late in the sabbaths, at the dawning into the first of the sabbaths, Mary the Magdalene and the other Mary came to gaze upon the grave.” Matthew 28:1 LITV – Jay Green
“Ὀψὲ δὲ σαββάτων, τῇ ἐπιφωσκούσῃ εἰς μίαν σαββάτων, ἦλθε Μαρία ἡ Μαγδαληνὴ καὶ ἡ ἄλλη Μαρία θεωρῆσαι τὸν τάφον.” Greek New Testament Matthew 28:1
John 20:19
Is it possible to have two Sabbaths in one week?
Yes, the weekly Sabbath and the holy feast day is also called a Sabbath.
“Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.” John 20:19 KJV
Should be translated:
“Then it being evening on that day, the first of the Sabbaths, and the doors having been locked where the disciples were assembled because of fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst and said to them, Peace to you.” John 20:19 Jay Green - LITV
